Liz Trotta and Rape in the Military - 15 February, 2012
Ms. Trotta has made me a sputtering being of incredulity and quite a bit of ire. She believes that women can only be victims of rape, that they should expect to be raped, and that males everywhere are beasts who can't control their sexual urges and must rape every female within arm's reach. But even as she says that women can only be victims, she adamantly insists that the women (victims) should not be treated as victims, and should not be assisted or supported in any way by the government that sends them and their male counteparts into combat zones. Per Ms. Trotta's credentials, she was the first woman to cover a war for broadcast news, and she covered the Vietnam War. She was "in the trenches" (according to her book title), and she was in a war zone. So do her statements mean that when she was on assignment in a war zone she was okay with being and she expected to be raped "the right amount" (but not "raped too much," of course) by her fellow male reporters, her male body guards, and any male military personnel who happened to saunter by? And as a reporter on military conflicts/events, how does she justify saying the following: "That's funny, I thought the mission of the army and the navy and the armed services was to protect US, NOT the people who are fighting the war." Oh my goodness.
