Virginia law mandating transvaginal ultrasounds before an abortion - 17 February, 2012

"The ultrasound legislation would constitute an unprecedented government mandate to insert vaginal ultrasonic probes into women as part of a state-ordered effort to dissuade them from terminating pregnancies." I need no further reminder to avoid the state of Virginia. Todd Gilbert (R-Shenandoah) stated that "in the vast majority of these cases [of seeking abortion], these are matters of lifestyle convenience." Rape, incest, failed condoms/contraceptives/birth control, and endangering the mother's life are "lifestyle conveniences"? Was he not-so-subtly labelling all women who seek to prevent or terminate a pregnancy as sluts, whores, and careless with their bodies and the lives of others? I'm sure his wife, Ms. Jennifer Wishon Gilbert, the White House correspondent for Christian Broadcast News, agrees. Though he later apologized on his website for trivializing the decision to have an abortion as "It leaves scars, both mental and physical, that can last forever" and he regrets that his comments "were insensitive to that reality," I wonder why he didn't think of the insensitivity and pain BEFORE he opened his mouth in the first place? I also can't help but wonder if he agrees with Ms. Liz Trotta (see http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/13/fox-news-liz-trotta-rape_n_1274018.html) that women should expect to be raped when serving in the military, as being a victim of rape is a "lifestyle convenience." My my my ... it's 2012 and it sure seems like the U.S. is certainly going into a tailspin when it comes to health, women, freedom, and respect.
