My friend from undergrad Will Pitts wrote this, and I thought it was incredibly important to share.
"If someone posts on their wall that they are sad to see that Whitney
Houston passed away, that does NOT mean they do not care about men and
women that have sacrificed their lives in the military or in public
service. Obviously, Whitney's life was troubled, but she was an
inspiration to many people, regardless of your feelings about her. I
wish there were more ways that we could recognize our fallen
heroes. They deserve all the recognition that we can give! But it is
pointless to suggest that it is demeaning or insulting to not mention
these brave soldiers every time someone else in the world with
significant inspiration passes. Discouraging others from celebrating
someone else's life does nothing to honor our military. Continue to
honor them with your kind words and your support of military families
and initiatives. Just don't assume it makes you more "patriotic" to
attack the grieving of others..."
