I’m so proud of these young men and women, taking the risk of being
leaders of something in which they believe – themselves. I hope that the
professionalism will give way to true respect and support, and I hope
that many more individuals will no longer have to choose between serving
their country and serving themselves.
The words of
Joshua Fontanez are especially significant for me. "The aspects of my
sexual orientation, how that played in the military, that was something I
was willing to sacrifice, being open versus serving my nation,"
Fontanez said. "It's something I feel I was truly called toward and
truly loved, so it's great that I don't have necessarily to make that
sacrifice."
I am also overjoyed that the LGBTQA group
at Norwich is taking the opportunity to focus on sexual education,
sexual health, and sexual awareness instead of, as many
homophobic/homo-suspicious individuals may have feared, simply on the
sex act.
I am also extremely encouraged by the words of
the on-campus Norwich Christian Fellowship’s faculty advisor, biology
emeritus professor Carlos Pinkham. "We make it clear to them that we use
the bible as our guide and that as a result we can't condone the stuff
they do," Pinkham said. "But the Bible is also equally clear, in fact,
even more clear. ... Being judgmental about the sin without extending
love to the sinner is another form of sin." I wish other Christians
practiced the Bible and lived their lives as lovers instead of
condemners, ostrasizers, and villifiers.
